Inhalt/ Summary

Seit dem Umzug aufs Land hat der zehnjährige Martin nur Probleme: In der Schule ist er ein Außenseiter, seine Noten werden immer schlechter, und das Mädchen Marta – für das sich Martin interessiert – ist eher dem arroganten Kevin zugeneigt. Richtig wohl fühlt sich Martin nur in seinem Holzhaus, das er auf einem Felsen in einem einsamen Feld errichtet hat. Hier begegnet ihm eines Tages ein magischer Kater. Das Tier verwandelt sich in einen starken Jungen mit Katzenaugen, Schwanz und Schnurrbarthaaren – und erklärt sich bereit, Martin bei seinen Problemen zu helfen. Doch ist der magische Kater tatsächlich echt – oder nur eine Ausgeburt von Martins Fantasie? Ein Riesenspaß für Jung und Alt: In bunten Farben flott inszeniert, erzählt „Der magische Kater“ auf amüsante Weise vom Alleinsein, von Freundschaft und Mut. Dass die Flucht in kindliche Fantasien nicht immer ein Rückzug sein muss, sondern auch als Quelle für mehr Selbsbewusstsein dienen kann, zeigt der Film auf spielerische Weise.

Since moving to the countryside, ten-year-old Martin has had nothing but grief: he is an outsider at school, his marks are suffering, and Marta, the girl he likes, is more interested in arrogant Kevin. The only place where Martin feels okay is in the little wooden cabin he has built for himself in a remote field. One day, he meets Mat, a magic cat there. The creature turns into a strong boy with cat-like eyes, a tail and whiskers – and announces that he is willing to help Martin sort out his problems. Is the magic cat real – or just a figment of Martin’s imagination? Fast-paced and colourful, this film is great entertainment for all ages with its whimsical take on loneliness, friendship and courage. It shows with warmth and humour that the flight into childish fantasies need not necessarily be escapism, but can also serve to boost one’s confidence.

Regisseur René Vilbre wurde 1970 im estnischen Rakvere geboren. An der Tallinner Pädagogischen Universität studierte er Spielfilm-Regie. Heute ist Vilbre Kreativdirektor des estnischen Rundfunks. Er gestaltete die Clips für den Eurovision-Song-Contest des Jahres 2002 und inszenierte zahlreiche Kurzfilme, TV-Sendungen sowie Werbefilme. „Der magische Kater“ ist sein erster langer Spielfilm.

Director René Vilbre, born in 1970, graduated from Tallinn Pedagogical University, majoring in feature film directing. He is the Creative Director of Estonian Television, the author and director of the clips of the Eurovision 2002 TV programme as well as director of several short films, TV shows and commercials. “Mat the Cat” is his first full-length feature.
