Bestseller-Verfilmung aus Litauen

Binnen zwei Monaten nach seiner Befreiung aus dem nationalsozialistischen KZ Stutthof schrieb der litauische Schriftsteller Balys Sruoga seine Lagererfahrungen in einem realistisch grotesken Roman nieder, der jedoch von der sowjetischen Zensur verboten wurde. Erst 1957, zehn Jahre nach dem Tod des Dichters, konnte „Dievu miskas“ (Der Götterwald) erscheinen. Er wurde zu einem zentralen Werk der litauischen Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die stilistisch herausragende, kraftvolle Verfilmung des Bestsellers ist nun im Spielfilmwettbewerb der Nordischen Filmtage Lübeck zu sehen. Forest of the Gods von Algimantas Puipa („Die Wolfszahnkette“, NFL 1997, „Elzes Leben“, NFL 2000) ist nicht nur einer der erfolgreichsten Filme Litauens aller Zeiten, son-dern nach vielen Jahren der Abstinenz endlich wieder ein Film aus der spärlichen, aber umso spannenderen Kinematographie Litauens.

Lithuanian Bestseller Adaptation

Within two months of his liberation from the Nazi concentration camp at Stutthof, Lithuanian author Balys Sruoga wrote “Dievu miskas” (Forest of the Gods), a realistic, grotesque novel about his experience in the camp. However, the Soviet censors banned it, and the book was first published in 1957, ten years after the writer’s death. It was soon to become a key work of 20th century Lithuanian literature.
