Abgesang auf das Leben auf dem Land | The Demise of the Small Farm

Während alle Welt auf Nokia blickte, fanden im letzten Jahrzehnt tiefgreifende Veränderungen im Norden auf dem Lande statt. Diesen Entwicklungen widmen die Nordischen Filmtage einen Programmschwerpunkt. Veikko Aaltonen, bekannt als Regisseur von Spielfilmen wie „Der verlorene Sohn “ (LN-Publikumspreis, Baltischer Filmpreis, NFL ’93),dokumentiert in Maa/Earth die Veränderungen im nördlichen Finnland zwischen 1995, als Finnland in die Europäische Union eintrat, und 2001. In dieser kurzen Zeit ging die Zahl der finnischen Höfe im Zuge der Zentralisierungsbestrebungen der EU von 140.000 auf 75.000 zurück. Aaltonen zeigt vor allem die verheerende Wirkung dieser Politik auf das gesamte Dorfleben und das Befinden der Bauern, die früher Freude an der Arbeit auf dem Land und mit den Tieren hatten und heute entweder Agrargroßbetriebe managen oder aufgeben müssen. Mit Lokinhamrar - To Be or Not To Be liefern Sigurdur Grimsson und Angelika Andrees ein Porträt von Nonni, dem letzten Bauern in einem abgelegenen isländischen Tal. Ein Jahr lang kämpft er mit der Natur, noch mehr jedoch mit dem Gedanken, seinen geliebten Hof endgültig aufgeben zu müssen. Die Liebe zum Land bewegen auch Veikko und Impi Schroderus in ihrem Kampf gegen den Bau eines Staudamms im finnischen Lappland, den Mika Ronkainen in Before the Flood - The Last Couple in Vuotos aufzeichnet. One of the most significant socio-political developments in the northern regions of Scandinavia during the last decade is the destruction of small farms, the growing unemployment and the resulting rural exodus. A number of impressive documentaries from Finland and Iceland focus on this issue. Veikko Aaltonen, who is known as the director of such feature films as “The Prodigal Son” and “Pater Noster”, spent several years documenting these changes in northern Finland between 1995, when Finland joined the European Union, and 2001. In this short period of time the number of farms dropped from 140.000 to 75.000. In Maa/Earth Aaltonen shows the devastating effect of EU politics on the entire life of the villages and the psyche of the farmers, who are either forced to expand their farms and concentrate on one single product or give up. In Lokinhamrar - To Be or Not To Be Sigurdur Grimsson and Angelika Andrees have portrayed Nonni, the last farmer remaining in a remote valley in Iceland. The whole year long he struggles with Nature, but even more with the thought that he might have to give up his beloved farm. The love of the countryside is also what moves Veikko and Impi Schroderus to fight against a proposal to build a dam and flood the land in northern Finland. In Before the Flood - The Last Couple in Vuotos Mika Ronkainen documents their persistent struggle to save their homeland. In another documentary Ronkainen examines the consequences of the recession in northern Finland. After losing their jobs Viljo and Kaisu Mikkonen try their hand at direct marketing for an American company. According to the snowball principle they hope to get lots of customers and other people working for them, at which time they are promised a new car. In Car Bonus they learn that reality has a different story to tell.
