Inhalt/ Summary

Der Film nähert sich in sechs Kapiteln der Geschichte des einmaligen Phänomens internationaler Zusammenarbeit, der Hanse. Dieser lose und nicht einmal souveräne Zusammenschluß unabhängiger Städte stieg vom 13. bis zum 14. Jahrhundert zu einer nordeuropäischen Großmacht auf. In langwierigen Verhandlungen verstanden es die Städte, ein Netz von Privilegien aufzubauen. Sie beherrschten den Handel von England und Flandern bis nach Rußland. Es gab kaum Waren der mittelalterlichen Welt, die nicht auf ihren Schiffen transportiert wurden. Sie waren so aber auch der große kulturelle Vermittler im Ostseeraum. Mit der sich verändernden und sich ausweitenden Welt im 16. Jahrhundert verlor sie an Einfluß gegenüber den nationale Interessen vertretenden Königreichen. Als der letzte Hansetag 1669 zusammentrat, war die Zeit der Hanse bereits vorbei. Die Städte gingen fort an getrennte Wege.

A film in six chapters tracing the history of the Hanseatic League, a loose-knit international alliance of independent cities that rose to a position of enormous power in Northern Europe in the 13th to 14th centuries. The members of the league built up a keenly negotiated network of privilege that enabled them to dominate European trade from England and Flanders all the way to Russia. There was hardly a single commodity in the medieval world that was not transported on their ships. At the same time, the league had an enormous impact on the cultural life of the Baltic region. Its influence waned in the changing and expanding world of the 16th century that brought with it a wider sphere of national interests. By the time the Hanseatic League held its last meeting in 1669, its heyday was already over. Thereafter the cities went their separate ways.

Dr. Manfred Johannsen, geboren 1933 in Rendsburg und aufgewachsen in Flensburg, ist seit drei Jahrzehnten als Journalist, Dramaturg und Redakteur sowie als Referatsleiter bei Inter Nationes tätig. Er ist mit der redaktionelle Erarbeitung und Gestaltung von Treatments und Drehbüchern ebenso befaßt wie mit der Produktionsbetreuung und der Synchronisation von Dokumentar- und Spielfilmen. Außerdem hat er zahlreiche eigene dokumentarische Projekte realisiert.

Dr Manfred Johannsen was born in 1933 in Rendsburg and grew up in Flensburg. He has worked as a journalist and script editor and as a project leader for Inter Nationes. Apart from editing and structuring scripts and abstracts, he has supervised the production and synchronisation of documentaries and feature films. He has also realised a number of documentary projects of his own.
